Security in the transport sector is important and has always had high priority for transport providers and public authorities alike. In public transport, passenger safety is paramount and it is important that there is an overview of key areas, infrastructure and equipment.

Passengers’ peace of mind
When we make use of public transport, we passengers probably do not think very much about whether there are security systems in the buses, trains or stations. In fact, security systems are a vital part of the service provided and, to a great extent, the systems are used to monitor both people and equipment.

Platform surveillance as a measure against violence and theft is particularly widespread in Denmark. Even when passengers take a bus, surveillance of both driver and passengers is common. This creates peace of mind and has a preventative effect against increasing violence and vandalism. And if something does happen, the surveillance helps the subsequent police investigation by documenting what happened.

Optimising traffic flow and protecting equipment
Surveillance of national roads, important intersections, and major railway stations is beneficial because “live” video images can help achieve optimal traffic flow. We see this on motorways, where warnings are given about queues forming and video images show the situation “live”.

Main railway stations, such as Copenhagen Central Station, also use video cameras to help traffic flow. Video recordings can also help curb vandalism and assist the police investigations when vandalism has taken place.
